As Confluence Data Center (and the Open Souce license I am running on) ... is not gonna be around forever, I have started looking into altermnatives:
Confluence Cloud
First realisation was, that migrating to Confluence Cloud would cost me quite some money:
- As Confluence Free plan does not have Permissions, it cant be public, hence I need Confluence Standard plan
- As Confluence Free plan has 2 GB storage limit, I cant really use it
So:
And this is before any Apps (Plugins), I dont "need" at least:
- Draw.io
- Refined (Counfluence Cloud is not really a web-site app)
So - this will add up on a yearly basis....
I did some migrations tests over christmass 2024, and the result was acceptable, do Refined is a fresh setup in cloud...
Alternatives
xwiki cloud
I did som tests here, and even a small Confluence Space import. Conclusions are:
- XWiki is also pricy in cloud
- The Editor is good, but no more than this
- Pro stuff cost more money
- Confluence Cloud would be cheaper or same price, and with better functionality...
xwiki onpremise (Docker)
xwiki onpremise (Community edition) is nothing like the Cloud version. Conclusions are:
- Very basic wiki
- Editor is really old and not wsywig
- Extension download did not work very well
In short - not very interesting.....
Next step
I did google and looked, and in generel 2 conclusions came up:
- There is no free rides ind cloud (at all)
- Must onprime is old'ish and badly maintained
One Wiki that did stand out a bit, was DokuWiki that has a few good things:
- No database is used
- All content are filebased - hence management, data manipulation and migration is simple
- The eco-system seems alive and updated (more or less)
I did find a Confluence 2 DokuWiki migrator (pr. space) - https://github.com/mschlenstedt/confluence2dokuwiki
So DokuWiki could be an alternative...
