Advarsel

Lately, I have been working on my Media Center Setup on the Apple Platform, using these devices throughout the House:

...

width900px

...

Hardware

Software

MacMini with OS/X

Elgato EyeTV

iMac with OS/X

HandBrake (And HandBrake CLI)

Apple TV gen 1+2

VLC (VideoLAN Client)

NetGear ReadyNAS

XBMC

2 x DELL pc's with Windows

iPhone 3Gs

iPad gen. 1

...

Elgato Hybrid USB Stick

Terratec T5

...

...

Some thoughts:

Some key factors was that the interface should be quite similar on most access devices, making XBMC the natural choice (Get get some sort of WAF).

Secondly, besides Music and Movies, recorded TV should be easy to view, and I am not impressed on the Elgato/iTunes Combo, and the Elgato remote (look like and is a terrible piece of China junk - and why does Front Row always starts with the MENU Button on the Apple Remote?

A main issue I discovered along the way, is that XBMC cant play all EyeTV recordings, and that the EyeTV structure and filenaming sucks seen from a XBMC Point-Of-View, as XBMC sees the native filenames and does not know the EyeTV package structure .....

So my current setup is:

The iPhone and iPad is used for scheduling recordings in EyeTV, the EyeTV GUI is never used on the MacMini besides setting up stuff and epg.
Exporting all EyeTV recordings to plain H.264 with Handbrake or VLC  and distribute it to the NAS via rsync (so we dont need to trust or do stupid OS/X mounts). This makes all XBMC clients able to see and play the recordings.
How to setup Export:

The export can be done with several applications, I am using Handbrake with the Command Line Interface (CLI) and VLC (to try and get subtitles out also, as Handbrake cant do this for some channels)

Download the HandBrake CLI and put it into "Applications"
Download VLC
Download my eyetvexport.sh script and correct paths to Your installation
Setup SSH Keys on OS/X and the NAS
Set Crontab to run the script every day

Problems still not solved:

Find does not take account for files that are currently recorded (some -atime parameter missing)
Not solved

Exporting DR HD Content make the solution extremely poor.. Solved by manually setting Handbrake CLI parameters!

Tanker

Work in progress with channel identification and VLC transcoding.
